On translating "they" and
"their" in Acts 13:2
In the ISV's rendering of
Acts 13:2, the second word, is the word "they" speaking of " the church" or
"prophets and teachers"? In verse three, what about "they," and "their" ?
The antecedent of the verbs "worshiping"
and "fasting" is the "prophets and teachers" mentioned
in verse one. The word auton
in the participial phrase
leitourgounton de auton ("While
they were worshipping") is plural, thus referring to several people --
i.e., the people identified in verse one -- rather than being
singular, which might otherwise have connoted a single group such as the
local church. This is why the Committee on Translation rendered the phrase
"While they were..." rather than "While the church was..."
In verse three, what
about "they," and "their" ?
Similarly, the "they" and "their" in
verse 3 refers to the teachers and prophets identified in verse
one.
