What Reviewers and Readers
Say about the ISV®

"Is there a man, learned or unlearned, who will not, when he takes the volume into his hands, and perceives that what he reads does not suit his settled tastes, break out immediately into violent language, and call me a forger, and a profane person for having the audacity to add anything to the ancient books, or to make any changes or corrections therein? It is idle to play the lyre for an ass. So great is the force of established usage that even acknowledged corruptions please the greater part, for they prefer to have their copies pretty rather than accurate."

Jerome

Dear ISV Foundation:

I own all the published ISV sections and I use the ISV NT quite often on e-sword.  I’m very much looking forward to owning an entire ISV bible.  You have no idea how valuable this bible is to me.  The word choice and sentence structure seem to bring it to life (as though English was the original language).  I had no idea the NT was so poetic.

I am developing quite a bit a trust for this translation, which is rare.  I love what is said about preserving the same ambiguity; I imagine that must be a difficult approach, but I admire and respect it.

I hope to convince my pastor to use the ISV instead of the [insert 3-letter abbreviation for name of dopey paraphrase here] for the discipleship class. I find myself cringing when I read the [insert 3-letter abbreviation for name of dopey paraphrase here]. ...

PS. I do believe I actually would wear a t-shirt with the triglyph if it were advertising the ISV.

Dear ISV Foundation:

I know that nothing sinks a new version of scripture quicker than odd or variant translations that jar the reader. In my opinion, the ISV is one of the two finest mediating translations available.

I believe that one of the ISV's greatest strengths is its flawless translation; it is accurate, yet it reads naturally and smoothly in the New Testament.

I also appreciate the text notes that give the literal translation when the translators have opted for academic paraphrases. The accurate verb tenses are also priceless.

The ISV New Testament is a true treasure. You and your team are in my prayers as you labor in the mines of the Old Testament.

Thank you for your fine translation. I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas.

"Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift." 2 Corinthians 9:15

Uh, wouldn't you know it...This person quoted some other translation, instead of the ISV, in that statement from 2 Corinthians!!

Dear ISV Foundation:

I'm writing with appreciation. ... I find the language of the ISV translation to be deft and vigorous, giving the text an impact that (I imagine) the original autographs must have had on their first readers.

Dear ISV Foundation:

The ISV is a great translation, and is the version I use for reading, study (along with the Greek NT), and memorization.

I look forward with great anticipation to the OT. I recently looked at samples from the new [insert name of another modern translation that tried to mimic the ISV here].

While the aim of that project sounds in some ways similar to that of the ISV, the results are very different indeed. Their translation (and I want to be kind here) is neither fish nor fowl...it doesn't succeed as a translation useful for either reading or study.

I say this not to criticize (some people actually liked the [insert 4-letter abbreviation name of another modern translation here], for example) but to commend you for the good work you have done, and to encourage you to continue.

[Insert name of big Bible publisher here] is a large organization with much more visibility than Davidson Press. I hope your efforts will not be overshadowed and confused with their new version. (I for one never confused the ISV with the NIV, but...)
